I WAS HACKED ON EBAY!

When was the last time you changed your passwords on all your accounts??

STOP what you are doing or planning on doing and go change your passwords on your email accounts, bank accounts and if you have an Ebay account & Paypal account....and any others where you haven't changed them the last six month.

Between last night checking in on Ebay at around 11pm and my first log in today at 8am, (less than 10 hrs.) I had been HACKED big time! I could not get into My Ebay account using my standard password. I had to call them and they gave me a new temporary password. (I have to admit that it had been a long time since I changed my password and it did have letters & numbers in it and was 8 digits long.)

When I logged into Ebay using the temporary password, there were 177 messages and 233 BIG PRICE TICKET ITEMS & listings that were not mine and over $300 worth of fees. The Ebay person on the phone was very helpful and actually listened to me, and agreed that I had been hacked by a 3rd party. She was able to remove the listings that were not mine, cancel the messages, and remove the fees. She even called me back in 30 minutes to confirm that the items had been removed.

There's no way to find out how this person got my password, as I am very careful about fraudulent emails, internet sites, etc., have good spyware & virus ware and my computer is scanned every 24 hrs.

Since the hackers are out there and let me assure you, they are.....then the only thing we can do is consistently change our passwords every month and stay away from unknown sites, especially "freebies", videos and music downloads!

So......as Nike's commercials used to say........."JUST DO IT". I hope by posting this message today, that it will save at least one person the headache of being hacked! It's just not fun! I'm thankful that no personal information was obtained or hacked.

  1. Oh my! Thank you so much for this post. I'm actually listening to an audiobook (fictional) about everything that hackers and identity thieves can do and it's very scary. I'm so sorry that you've gone through this, but am grateful that you've shared your experience with the rest of us.

  3. Thanks for this information. I don't change my passwords enough I know so this will get me off my bottom to do it.

Speaking of doing it, I want to thank you for getting me moving on the quilt I posted about that I was having trouble moving on. I stopped thinking about doing it and just did it as you suggested and I finished. It was freeing to trust my instincts and just get on with it. I gave you credt for getting me moving on my blog so thanks!

  6. That is VERY scary! Thank you for posting this. I read your post, then immediately changed my eBay & Paypal passwords, and now I want to thank you!!! We have to change passwords at work every 3-6 months, but I never think about doing it for my personal accounts. BTW, I love your quilted bag! I hope to come back to your blog!

  7. I hope everyone takes your advice because the same thing happened to me! My experience was not near as extreme as yours but someone had gone in and listed a drum set using my account! Apparently I caught it before they completely hacked in and changed my passwords! Why don't they just get their own account, jeez!

I hope it all turned out okay for you in the end and you got everything fixed and back to normal. I am going to change my passwords regularly from now on!

  8. This is exactly why I try to keep all my passwords different, so if they do get it doesn't work on everything!! It's hard to remember them sometimes but I just feel safer about it.

  9. i have relisted the same auction item 3 times now b/c someone from Nigeria comes in at the last minute and bids my items. i am beyond furious about this. Nothing I can do but relist the item. However unknowingly to the Nigerian bidder is that I have a friend over in Nigeria that can and will pay a visit to the supplied address for shipping. Maybe a louisville slugger to the wrists will let these ppl know us EBAY'ers mean business...
