Trying to Clean Up Messes

The New Year and January always brings with it many goals and so many things I want to do.  What about you?

Messes!  especially messes in my sewing room!   Arrrrrgh!
There was really no way I could start or finish up any of my sewing/quilting projects until I tackled this mess.

So, while my expert computer guy was cleaning up and fixing my computer remotely, I jumped in with both feet......and hands.  I kept my cell phone on alert for text messages from him on what he needed from me and what to do on my end for the computer fixing.   Good News!   My computer is running like new again.  (If you want to know more about fixing your computer like this, just contact me.)

Okay....back to my messes.  I sorted, sorted, and sorted....pressed...sorted some more..........threw away (Yes, I know.....that's unheard of with being a quilter

but I'm talking snips, threads, unuseable scraps).

There was no way all the scraps for my 2 1/2" squares bin were going to fit in this bin.

So.....dug around in that scrap bin......and

sorted out the squares, and those that weren't wide enough I made a pile for the string/strip quilt box.  (that's the strips you see in the forefront of the picture.)

I'm not finished yet.......but it's a start and now I can see my cutting table again.

What do you do with all of your scraps?

  1. I have to find a bigger bin for my scraps, too. I really need to make something with those strips!

  2. My scrap bin is overflowing as well - we should organize a scrap quilt challenge or something to help us get them used up!

    1. Thanks for visiting. Good idea, but I don't do well with the idea of challenges....due to my time racket.....lol

  3. Mine are in a big bin, then I use them for scrap quilts once I separate by color!

  4. I have so many scraps I think they multiply when I turn off the lights! It's really not a problem for me
I love making scrap quilts and journal covers, pincushions, cosmetic bags. Lots of small things that
    use up scraps.

    1. Char...that' s great...good for you. With all this cutting I do for my etsy shop, I create way more than the average quilter....bins overflow all the time.

  5. Thanks for stopping by my blog; I agree with you that the red stripe is the way to go. I was surprised by how many commenters think the blue is best. It IS very tempting!

I don't have much organization for my scraps. I have several bags full. I often use scraps, though. I just dig through and pull them out by color. The twister quilt generated very few scraps since I used the cut-off squares in the outer border. I even had to cull through my existing scrap stash to make a dozen or so more squares to complete the outer border. I keep resisting pressure from the OCD side of my brain to militantly organize every single scrap I have. I would just love to do that, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't get any sewing done for a very long times if I spent all that free time organizing.

  7. I keep my scraps in large Ziploc plastic bags, sorted by color. At least, that's the theory - I also have bags and bins and piles of scraps waiting to be sorted by color. I often use my scraps in quilts, and sometimes I use them as inspiration for color combinations.

  8. I have bins for scraps and larger pieces of leftover fabric. Since I keep the first 8-9" of every bolt for myself, there is a LOT of it.

  9. I love making string quilts so most of my scraps go towards those. I find it always nice to have all those small pieces around for last minute projects.

  10. I just use a large reusable grocery bag and plop all my scraps in there. It's almost full, and I'm not sure what I'll do with then. You sound much more organized than I am!
