SHOWING OFF A BIT!

Every quilter, crafter, sewer, needlecrafter knows the joy of sharing her items with others interested in similar things.  I don't belong to a quilt guild anymore to enjoy the  "Bring and Brag" part, so I  share some of my special creations here.  But..........first.....the story.

A few months back I had a request on Etsy from a nice lady to make a  custom satin dolly quilt.   I thought..."oh no...satin?"   We sent emails back and forth a bit, and once I found out it was going to be a gift for her mother-in-law's 80th Birthday, I wanted to try to make it for her.   Apparently her mother in law had been talking about this special dolly she got for one of her birthdays when she was a small girl and how she wished she still had that doll.   (Those of us who are " mature seniors" can all relate to that special doll we had as young girls.  I'm one of the fortunate ones who still has her first doll.)

This wonderful daughter-in-law decided to go on a quest to fulfill this dream of her mother-in-law's.  She found the antique dolly like her mother-in-law talked about on Ebay in very good condition, and she also found a very small antique wicker cradle for it on Ruby Lane's site.   She also sent me a couple of pictures of raggedy looking antique satin dolly quilts.  I finally agreed  to make it for her.

All these items you see are made to fit a  very small  14 1/2" long x 8 1/2" wide cradle (think of a 12" ruler).   I made the tufted mattress and pillow first, then the sheet and pillow case.  My customer wanted the quilt body to be quilted in a diamond grid pattern, have a turn down on it with tiny pink flowers and a ruffle all around and we agreed on ivory colored satin rather than pure white.

Here's the tufted mattress with satin sheet

The mattress with the sheet cover and matching pillow and embroidered pillow case.

Here's the finished quilt and pillow set on the mattress.

Another view of the quilt and pillow without the mattress.  (It has satin on the back too.)

I sure hope there's plenty of tissues available when that 80 yr. old lady unwraps this dolly set  special gift from her loving daughter-in-law.   Maybe I should include a box of tissues when I mail it to her.   What do you think??

  2. That is WONDERFUL.....and how nice for a daughter-in-law to do this for a mother-in-law! I am sure there will not be a dry eye in the house. You are a peach for making this to look just as they wanted and you did a terrific job.
